Broncos Triumph: Paix and Cobbo Shine in Commanding Win Over Roosters

In a commanding display, the Brisbane Broncos defeated the Sydney Roosters 50-14, marking a successful start to the Michael Maguire era. Playing at Suncorp Stadium, the Broncos showcased their dominance from the onset. Cory Paix, returning to action for the first time since 2023 and starting for the first time since 2020, made an immediate impact by scoring a try in his comeback game. This performance set the tone for a first half that saw Jack Gosiewski also cross the line, contributing to Brisbane's 20-4 lead at halftime.

The Roosters faced significant challenges throughout the match. They played without key forwards Spencer Leniu, Nat Butcher, and Egan Butcher, who left during the off-season. Additionally, injuries sidelined halfback Sam Walker and hooker Brandon Smith with torn ACLs. Despite these setbacks, the Roosters started strong with Dom Young scoring the opening try. However, their momentum was short-lived as Gehamat Shibasaki responded with a try for the Broncos just a minute later.

The second half saw Selwyn Cobbo steal the spotlight with an extraordinary triple-kick try and three additional tries, further extending Brisbane's lead. Ben Hunt, playing his first game for the Broncos since 2017, also scored, while Reece Walsh and Jesse Arthars added tries as the scoreline widened considerably. The Roosters' woes were compounded when Victor Radley was concussed in the 13th minute following a collision with captain James Tedesco.

The win was not only a testament to the Broncos' prowess on the field but also their ability to adapt swiftly to impending challenges. Following the match, players quickly exited the stadium to return to Brisbane ahead of Tropical Cyclone Alfred's expected landfall over the weekend, demonstrating their strategic planning off the field as well.
