Sam’s Club has announced ambitious plans to massively expand their footprint. They’re ambitious, looking to double their membership and more than double their sales and profits in eight to ten years. The company’s strategic vision was unveiled during Walmart Inc.’s 2025 Investment Community Meeting, which took place on April 11. Sam’s Club is leading the charge among Walmart Inc.’s subsidiaries to begin the next wave of transformation. They’re currently planning to retrofit all 600 stations.
This change will bring a completely new experience to Sam’s Club, using state-of-the-art technology and cutting-edge designs. The remodels will be based on the new design of the Grapevine, Texas store, which serves as a prototype for the upcoming changes. This store features the latest innovations including Scan & Go technology. Together, these features allow members to make shopping easier and more convenient by shipping purchases straight to their doors.
Walmart-owned Sam’s Club is increasing the pace of their remodeling. In addition to this dramatic cut in employee hours, they intend to open 30 new stores in this accelerated expansion timeframe. The business is targeting the continued aggressive opening of about 15 new clubs/year, as that is the key growth lever under company management’s control. In addition to growing membership, this expansion is meant to improve the customer experience and customer loyalty across the board.
In an interview, incoming Sam’s Club president and CEO Chris Nicholas stressed the depth of these changes. He stated, “This is one of the fastest, most scalable transformations happening in retail today.” He remarked on the importance of member interactions with associates, noting that “when a member has a meaningful, positive interaction with an associate, they’re more likely to renew — and stay loyal.”
The Sam’s Club drive to double its membership is a strategic move in Sam’s broader efforts to reestablish itself in the competitive retail landscape. Nicholas declared, “Sam’s Club is on a mission to become the world’s best club retailer — and we’re just getting started.” This statement underscores the company’s commitment to not only enhance the shopping experience but solidify its standing in the competitive retail landscape.
Sam’s Club’s ambitious plans are a testament to the power of looking ahead and becoming flexible to consumer demands and technological advancements. By leaning into this change and creativity, the automaker is positioning itself to achieve long-term success while earning the trust and loyalty of future customers.
