The St. George Illawarra Dragons managed to secure a narrow 20-18 victory over the Manly Sea Eagles at Brookvale, moving into the NRL top eight in a thrilling encounter. The match unfolded dramatically as the Sea Eagles fought back fiercely, even while playing with only 12 men due to a sin bin infraction. This contest showcased the resilience of both teams and highlighted the Dragons’ struggle with maintaining leads, having previously lost two games after holding a 12-point advantage this season.
In the 1st half, it was all Dragons, as they cruised to a comfortable lead. Tyrell Sloan crossed for a double, leading his side to a 14-0 lead just after half time. The Sea Eagles, inspired by an infamously hostile home crowd, started to fight their way back into the game. The tipping point in the match came when Toafofoa Sipley was sent to the sin bin after a hip drop tackle. Even while one man short, the Sea Eagles took their chances well.
Sea Eagles Show Resilience
As the second half continued, the Sea Eagles — clearly not intimidated by playing a man down — found their groove. Tolutau Koula scored a critical try that sparked thoughts of a miracle comeback. Soon after that, Ben Trbojevic added a third, and just like that the deficit was cut to two points and the pressure was back on the Dragons.
Jacob Liddle’s score for the Sea Eagles illustrated their tenacity as he bulldozed through the Dragons’ defense from close range. Of the three, Manly’s turn-around was the most remarkable. This was all the more impressive given that they were on the brink of suffering their third straight loss in the NRL. The team’s ability to keep on fighting despite difficult conditions is indicative of their determination and heart.
Dragons Battle to Maintain Lead
The Dragons were under constant pressure as they tried to defend their precious, if tenuous, lead. Warriors fullback Val Holmes was instrumental to their attack by claiming a hat-trick of goals in the game. Just like that, the doubts started to set in for the Dragons as they struggled with their daymare of a season replete with losing leads. They were particularly conscious of the fact that letting the Sea Eagles back into the match might be out-of-step with a more ominous portent.
As the game approached full time, Daly Cherry Evans made the most of his opportunity. His final attempt was a 2-pt field goal that would’ve tied the game. Against all odds, Manly’s attempt was wide left, sealing his – and Manly’s – fate. The Dragons must have breathed a huge sigh of relief. They held onto their lead and won an important match!
