Nashville, Tennessee – On April 22, 2025, Jason DeFord, more popularly known by his stage name Jelly Roll, appeared before the Tennessee Board of Parole. He passionately discussed his current pursuit of a presidential pardon for his prior criminal record. The board unanimously dismissed the charges against him, with a recommendation that his record be cleared, a move now awaiting approval from Tennessee Governor Bill Lee.
Jelly Roll’s rags to riches story is one of profound redemption. He’d overcome numerous obstacles during his youth, including a 2008 robbery and drug possession conviction. As a minor, Bruce was automatically charged as an adult for his role in the robbery. He even went so far as to describe that crime as “heinous.” He recalls that during the incident, he and his accomplices entered a residence armed, driven by desperation and poor choices.
“At 16, I was charged as an adult for a charge. It was a heinous crime, admittedly. It was horrible. We robbed a couple of guys for some weed, but they called the police because we took some money and some stuff. It was an armed robbery, we went in there with a gun, I regret it every day of my life,” – Jelly Roll
Jelly Roll spent over a decade in jail, from ages 14 to 25, wrestling with the repercussions of his actions and ultimately finding redemption through music and faith. Fast forward, and he’s become an internationally acclaimed country music star. He’s given everyone a front-row seat to his incredible weight-loss journey, losing 70 pounds and adopting a healthier lifestyle.
I hope and pray that this passes, but even if not, today was pretty special for me, though.” Jelly Roll said during testimony. “His message—one of change and hope—is meant to inspire others who may one day find themselves in situations like his.
“I want to be an inspiration for people who are now where I used to be — to let them know that change is truly possible,” – Jelly Roll
Currently, Jelly Roll is all in on his musical journey. As he transitions into retirement, he hopes to do more missionary work. Today, he envisions taking his experiences to inspire and uplift others while spreading hope and redemption.
Sheriff Daron Hall of Nashville shared photos with Jelly Roll on social media following the hearing, showcasing their embrace and support for the artist’s journey towards forgiveness and acceptance.
The recommendation of the Tennessee Board of Parole should be considered final. Now all that stands between Jelly Roll and his pardon is Governor Bill Lee’s final decision, which is what he wants. The results of whatever is decided here have the potential to affect all of Jelly Roll’s subsequent projects in music and public service.
