One of the largest police operation is in process. This has left the Bruce Highway closed in both directions around Maher Road in Gympie, Queensland. This closure comes in response to reports of shots fired at approximately 12:15 PM on Friday.
Because the situation was rapidly escalating, the police called an emergency under the Public Safety Preservation Act (PSPA). We will use this exclusion zone to create a No Maher Road Zone. This buffer zone would stretch more than a kilometer in each direction along the Bruce Highway parallel to Maher Road. Authorities are introducing these dangerous measures in the name of safety despite increased police presence.
Witnesses told @HoCoPolice that they heard gunshots in the area, leading police to respond right away with an active search. As the situation unfolded, both campus police and local law enforcement officers were quickly mobilized to secure the area and neutralize any threats.
“An emergency declaration enacted for part of the Bruce Highway in Coles Creek, Gympie, after reports of shots fired,” – police
The police operation, on which at least six separate units were involved in coordinating a complex scene and keeping the peace, has received intense scrutiny. Motorists on the Bruce Highway are advised to consider finding other ways to travel. The closure will create a major traffic flow nightmare.
Still, authorities have not released additional information about the deadly incident. They have failed to disclose whether there are any victims of injury or death in these incidents. The police continue to advise people to stay out of the exclusion zone until no notice is provided.
