Zach Merrett Faces Review After High Shot Incident on Blakey

Zach Merrett, a prolific playmaker for Essendon, is one of the favorites to win the Brownlow Medal. He’s now under the spotlight after hitting a high shot on Monday night that forced Sydney’s Nick Blakey to take a concussion test. That was the situation during this past Friday night’s game when the two players crashed into each other while fighting for a stray ball.

Merrett hit Blakey in the face as they both lunged toward the ball from opposite directions. Although the impact was significant, Merrett’s eyes were consistently focused on the ball throughout the play, indicating that the contact was unintentional. Despite the incident, Merrett was able to kick two goals in the match. He had a less impactful day at the midfield in general.

During a post-match interview, Merrett shared his honest opinion on the incident.

“I thought I tapped all ball … I was about to kick the goal.” – Zach Merrett

Reflecting on his lack of confidence about the possible consequences of the ordeal, he added,

“I haven’t seen it, but I don’t think there’s anything to worry about.” – Zach Merrett

As the play developed, Merrett tried to punch the ball free in front of him to create space. Unfortunately, this movement caused the unintended high contact with Blakey. While Merrett’s focus remained on the play, the outcome has raised questions about player safety and the necessity of concussion protocols.

Though they worried for Blakey’s health, Merrett didn’t seem concerned about the prospect of having to answer for the incident. This indifference is notable. Yet such contact frequently results in players receiving heightened scrutiny from league officials.

Essendon’s coach, Brad Scott, gave a bit of the context around Blakey’s injury in general.

“It’s almost certain that he’s done an ACL,” – Brad Scott

The league has yet to announce any additional punishment, pending a review of all available footage of the incident. As one of the favorites for the prestigious Brownlow Medal, attention will remain on how this incident influences his candidacy.
