A planning application for a new housing development has been submitted, proposing the construction of 450 homes in a community-oriented design. The Local Democracy Reporting Service added some of the most interesting aspects of the plan. Alison Stephenson’s thoughtful comments highlighted the plan’s commitment to sustainability and creation of a more connected community.
The proposed development includes plans for a village square, designed to serve as a central gathering space for future residents. This new feature builds community, promoting social connections between neighbors. The plans incorporate woodland planting intended to create a buffer zone along the A39, enhancing both environmental quality and residents’ privacy.
The new development will feature a main orchard and allotments, allowing residents access to gardening and food production activities right in their own neighborhood. These green spaces are especially needed in order to improve biodiversity and develop positive biophilic qualities that support creating a pleasing overall aesthetic appearance to the area. Wessex, the developer behind the approved proposal, released their visionary plan to the public. They commit to making at least 135 homes affordable—just under 30% of all their planned housing units. This new initiative is much more than a sign that the county is concerned about its local housing needs.
This new development has a level of variety rarely seen in accommodations. Whether a family needs a one-bedroom apartment or a five-bedroom house, these homes fit the bill. This diversity in housing options is designed to attract a broad demographic, from young professionals to larger families seeking a new home.
By the time the council went to report, it had an adequate number of sites in its area’s local plan. This plan should address our housing needs for the next five years. Recent shifts in federal housing targets have changed that dynamic. The adoption of the new targets led the council to reconsider its approach towards accommodating future housing needs.
Wessex is excited by the positive new development. They know that including sustainable elements will address environmental issues like climate change and flooding while positively impacting community health. By integrating green spaces and affordable homes within the design, they aim to create a vibrant community that aligns with contemporary sustainability goals.
