The Queensland Maroons have named their squad for this year’s State of Origin series. It has a very energetic blend of up-and-coming newcomers and wizened pros. Look at some of the high-profile moves by coach Billy Slater – the biggest, shuffling slick playmaker Tom Dearden from five-eighth to the No. 14 jersey. The squad depth will be tested, as two key players Reece Walsh and Ben Hunt will be out with injuries.
Though Walsh returns from a knee injury, Hunt is still hampered by a hamstring injury. Their absence leaves an opening for new talent to take center stage. Robert Toia, Beau Fermor and Trent Loiero are ready to take their chances and earn their State of Origin debuts! Loiero has been in terrific form this season, averaging 117 metres gained and 32 tackles per match.
Tino Fa’asuamaleaui re-joins the group at prop, having missed last edition with an ACL injury. His experience will be enormously important as the Maroons set about piecing together a competitive side. Kalyn Ponga returns as the starting custodian. His dynamic playmaking skills and his versatility will make it easy to incorporate him into the teams’ schemes.
The team is anchored with familiar talent and faces in Cameron Munster and Daly Cherry-Evans. Daly Cherry-Evans has risen to the captaincy challenge. Valentine Holmes, Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow and Xavier Coates are some of the highlights. Rugby League World Harry Grant, Moeaki Fotuaika, Reuben Cotter, Jeremiah Nanai and Pat Carrigan rounded out the list.
Now with Selwyn Cobbo fracturing his wrist in last week’s game, the depth of the squad will be pushed again. One thing the coaching staff has repeatedly said is that this team has shown great resilience and adaptability to overcome challenges.
“I would love to play Origin,” – Robert Toia
Toia’s enthusiasm is a testament to the excitement of his debut and the renewed energy he’s brought to the team. He’s spoken previously about his admiration for past legends such as Greg Inglis, illustrating the influence stars can have by transcending the game and capturing imaginations.
“I just remember watching GI (Inglis in Origin) and how dominant he was. It didn’t matter who was in front of him, he was just able to create havoc.” – Robert Toia
As the Maroons head into this potentially historic series, the hope is that their deep roster and tactical adjustments will help them take full advantage of their considerable talent. Having the right mix of youth and experience could give them a leg up on the competition.
