Nathan Cleary, who many consider as the world’s best player, returns from injury. Just shy of two years post-recovery, he’s itching to get back to the familiar State of Origin battlefield. The Penrith Panthers great whose produced 4 successive premierships has already etched himself into the cultures of the sport. However, impressive as this resume is, Cleary has never won a decider – losing two State of Origin deciders to the Maroons so far in his young career.
For a few months now, Cleary has been in the spotlight over his failures in the Origin series since making his debut back in 2018. He’s steered New South Wales (NSW) to three State of Origin series wins in 2018, 2019 and 2021. Under his leadership, the Commonwealth has achieved a balanced, winning record of 7-7. This new series is going to be an important vehicle for that. His partnership with Mitch Moses will be a first and considering the hype surrounding Cleary’s looming return, the excitement will surround Cleary’s return.
NSW coach Laurie Daley came out strongly in defence of Cleary amidst the star halfback’s recent critics, reiterating the player’s strong history of performances. “He’s already proven he can carry the weight on any stage,” Daley said, citing Cleary’s victories in campaigns and elections under considerable pressure.
When asked about reports alleging that Cleary has a point to prove, fellow Blues player Liam Martin called the idea “rubbish.” He went on to endorse Cleary’s strengths by citing his success, including those four premierships.
“I don’t think he has anything to prove. He is the best player in the game. I am sure he will be looking to go out and kill it. And I am sure he will.” – Liam Martin
Commenting on the issue, Isaah Yeo went. Cleary was praised by the Immortal for “crossed most frontiers” in his career, notably his classy plays on the big stages such as grand finals. Yeo reflected on the external conversations surrounding Cleary’s previous grand final outings. He continued, “the team is always aware of what he has done.”
“It seems to be the common thread, and is talked about in the lead up. But us internally, he’s crossed most (final frontiers).” – Isaah Yeo
As Cleary prepares for this important series, he does so with a wealth of experience. He brings an impressive collection of accolades, headlined by three World Cups. Billy Slater acknowledged the challenges ahead for Cleary and reiterated the strengths he possesses that could make a significant impact.
“Sure it’s a big task, but he has a few strengths to outlay as well.” – Billy Slater
As the State of Origin series draws near, Nathan Cleary is intent on proving his critics wrong. So no surprise that he is intent on improving what is already a great legacy. His collaborative relationship with Moses is key. That support from their teammates and the coaching staff will be essential today, as they look to take an upset win against their fierce rivals.
