Sunny, one of the fan favorite eaglets from this year’s Big Bear Valley eagle cam, has finally left the nest. This momentous event was broadcasted on June 2, 2025 and had millions of eagle enthusiasts around the world on the edge of their seats. Sunny has a reputation for being sassy. Though her departure is a momentous occasion, it comes as she begins her long journey into the wild.
Sunny was one of two eaglets monitored by the Friends of Big Bear Valley (FOBBV) and featured on the Big Bear Eagle Nest Cam. She lives in the nest with her sister Gizmo, and their mom, Jackie, and dad, Shadow. The two eaglets hatched in early March, and FOBBV has been resolved on the cam, studying their growth and learning process. Unfortunately, the family faced tragedy when a third sibling succumbed to the harsh conditions following a winter storm in mid-March.
Sunny, upon first flight, made one last turn back toward her parents’ favorite roost tree before launching into the sky. While Gizmo was at the nest, she was completely present. As she saw her sister depart, her heart beating with a mixed emotion of curiosity and solemn meditation.
“Gizmo watched the whole thing from right beside Sunny. She looked completely fascinated and kept her eyes on Sunny flying away from the nest.” – Friends of Big Bear Valley
When Sunny settled down after her flight, she was on top of the roost tree. She couldn’t stop herself from rushing out to practice her forms of flapping.
“She put up her wings to catch the wind and then jumped up and let those beautiful wings carry her.” – Friends of Big Bear Valley
As Sunny adjusts to her new life, Jackie and Shadow do their best to raise Gizmo, including offering powerful support and advice to help him find his purpose.
“Bringing her food, guarding her and teaching her all that she needs to know to be out in the world. All while they also continue taking care of Gizmo. Gizmo has a lot to think about.” – Friends of Big Bear Valley
Sunny’s departure has brought on a deeply mixed response from fans of the Big Bear Eagle Nest Cam.
“Congratulations, Sunny! — as we get to feel exuberance of this beautiful success and at the same time, sadness for change that means seeing her less often. Sunny is out in the world!” – Friends of Big Bear Valley
