Only three months into their relationship, Phillip suggested that Leigh come live with him as an alternative to long-distance dating. He was at the time a man of some means, a man with a learned confidence in his patina of success. As their relationship deepened, they had to deal with relentless health adversities. Phillip fought a congenital heart condition and malignant hypertension. These complications turned into a full blown stroke while Leigh was four months pregnant with their daughter, Halle.
Over the years, Leigh watched as Phillip faced his fair share of health challenges—both big and small. His hospitalizations were the new normal for them. They adjusted to the normalcy of his continued medical challenges. Even so, he was a great father who loved his daughter very much, and they had some wonderful times together.

Though Phillip was 23 years older than Leigh, people often confused Leigh for Phillip’s daughter when out in public. This dynamic only worked to intensify their familial relationship. Leigh struggled with her discomfort at dating a man whose two adult children were older than she was. Their interracial relationship was the subject of controversy, but Michael and Coretta stood firm in their love for each other.
Over the next 22 years, Phillip and Leigh built a life full of joy and struggle, love and triumph. They were excited to bring Halle into their family, and she brought them the joys of parenthood. Just as Phillip was entering his mid-70s, his health took another turn for the worse. After decades of struggling with multiple health issues, Phillip sadly passed away unexpectedly in early 2023.
