Culinary Icon Anne Burrell Passes Away at 55

Chef Anne Burrell, an influential figure in the culinary world and a familiar face on Food Network, has passed away at the age of 55. Her family confirmed the news, describing her as “a beloved wife, sister, daughter, stepmother, and friend.” Early life Burrell was born in Cazenovia, New York, on September 21, 1969. Her path to the culinary arts began at a young age, sparked by her mother’s home-cooked meals and the indelible impact of Julia Child on television.

Burrell went on to study at Canisius College in Buffalo, New York, obtaining a degree in English and Communications. This curiosity led her to dive headfirst into a culinary education, which took her to the nationally renowned Culinary Institute of America – from which she graduated in 1996. She honed her skills further on the Italian Culinary Institute for Foreigners campus in Italy. There, she learned her craft and came to understand a great love for Mediterranean cooking.

Through the early years, Burrell made a name for herself as a skilled chef. She sharpened her technique as a sous-chef in one of Manhattan’s top-tier hotspots, Felidia, under the legendary Lidia Bastianich. Afterwards she headed the kitchen at Savoy in Manhattan’s SoHo neighborhood. There, she became well-known for creating Mediterranean-influenced, seasonally focused dishes prepared over an open wood fire. Her culinary expertise and charismatic personality earned her a prominent role as the co-host of Food Network’s “Worst Cooks in America,” where she connected with aspiring chefs and food lovers alike.

As an author, Burrell found considerable success. She’s the author of two cookbooks, including the New York Times bestseller, Cook Like a Rock Star. She inspired a love for cooking and teaching among many more thousands of people. Her contributions to the culinary arts made an indelible mark, and she will be missed.

On April 22, 2025, Burrell attended City Harvest Presents The 2025 Gala: Carnaval at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York, showcasing her commitment to community initiatives aimed at addressing food insecurity.

She leaves her husband Stuart Claxton, whom she married in October 2021, and the son of her stepmother, Javier.

In remembrance of her vibrant spirit, a statement reflecting on Burrell’s influence noted, “Anne’s light radiated far beyond those she knew, touching millions across the world. Though she is no longer with us, her warmth, spirit, and boundless love remain eternal.” Food Network paid tribute to her legacy: “Anne was a remarkable person and culinary talent — teaching, competing and always sharing the importance of food in her life and the joy that a delicious meal can bring.”

“Her smile lit up every room she entered.”

Anne Burrell’s legacy will most certainly live on through her amazing culinary accomplishments. She opened doors and touched innumerable lives during her stellar career.
