Selwyn Cobbo Signs One-Year Deal with Dolphins After Broncos Exit

The gifted 23-year-old representative and Brisbane Bronco rugby league player, Selwyn Cobbo, has gone further. He signed a one-year contract with the Dolphins for 2026! This announcement follows a turbulent period for the Brisbane Broncos. In May, Cobbo was stood down from the NRL team after a five-try capitulation against Manly. His future at the Broncos did not seem assured. He soon fell down the pecking order under head coach Michael Maguire and was subsequently demoted to reserve grade.

Cobbo’s deal with the Broncos, which has him earning roughly $625,000 per season, is in its last year. In total Cobbo represented Queensland on six occasions, including his 2023 Test debut against New Zealand. With his influence within the Broncos waning, speculation began to grow about whether he would remain at Red Hill. His departure marks the beginning of a new chapter for him. He is looking forward to moving to the Redcliffe club in November ahead of next year’s pre-season.

The Dolphins’ CEO, Terry Reader, announced the signing on Friday morning, expressing enthusiasm for Cobbo’s potential. Reader had played up the chances that they weren’t going to land Cobbo, but he did eventually announce the deal with great enthusiasm.

“The Dolphins have always said we are about continuing to build a roster that will make us one of the top teams in the NRL,” – Dolphins representative.

Reader described Cobbo as “an accomplished player who has done some amazing things at both Origin and NRL level already.” As for Cobbo, he conceded she’d already enjoyed a phenomenal run. With his age being only 20 years old, he has a lot of untapped potential to go much higher in the sport.

“But we believe he has untapped potential to go to even greater heights in our game and are excited about what he can do in a Dolphins jersey,” – Dolphins representative.

Bishop Troy Thomson, who has worked with Cobbo closely, extolled his character beyond his on-field athletic achievements.

“Selwyn is not only a tremendous player, but he is a first-class human being,” – Troy Thomson.

Cobbo is approaching his debut with the Dolphins, hoping to reinvigorate his burgeoning career. He’s determined to lead the team back to their halcyon days as a perennial NRL title contender. His move should be a welcome relief and a new beginning. The move provides him an opportunity to display his versatility in a different setting.
