From Uncertainty to Glory: Gehamat Shibasaki’s Remarkable Journey to State of Origin

Gehamat Shibasaki, a 27-year-old centre, has taken an extreme route to his comeback. He’s gone from being an unknown commodity to being a potentially pivotal player for the Brisbane Broncos. Only six months ago, he was without an NRL contract. His extraordinary journey continued all the way to State of Origin history. Shibasaki would be the first player on a development-list contract to suit up for Queensland in the Origin decider.

Shibasaki has played for the Townsville Blackhawks in the Queensland Cup before. There, he honed his craft and proved that he was up for the challenge. He was a three-time Queensland Under 20s representative. Now – after a dramatic rise from the backwaters of Fiji – he’s the NRL’s most exciting young player, scoring 12 tries in only 15 games for the Broncos. His rise to stardom is a combination of his efforts, tutelage he’s received from coaches, and support from teammates.

A Fight for Recognition

Leading up into this season, Shibasaki dealt with some of the biggest hurdles yet. He was limited to just six games in total over three separate NRL clubs over four seasons. This time, though, he was fighting to get a new contract. During the preseason, he was “scraping through and fighting to get fit,” desperately seeking an opportunity in a competitive environment.

Backing from Broncos mentor Michael Maguire and Queensland teammate Pat Carrigan was crucial to Shibasaki’s journey. Maguire cheered him on and reminded him that preparation is key. Carrigan even offered Shibasaki a place to stay, writing, “If you want, come and live with me. This brotherly act by his teammate offered Shibasaki accommodation that not only ensured him a safe place but the inspiration to do better.

Reflecting on his rapid rise, Shibasaki expressed his gratitude, stating, “I am trying to soak it all in and focus on each day. My family is so happy and there’s been a lot of happy tears.”

An Unexpected Call

An unexpected phone call from the coach of the Maroons, Billy Slater, turned Shibasaki’s fortunes around. Bagging himself a call-up to play in the Origin decider, a huge turning point in his short career. Instead, this serendipitous opportunity left Shibasaki deeply inspired and hopeful about the path forward.

I’ll use this experience and hopefully it’s a once in a lifetime experience of playing for Queensland, he shared. The burden of history will be on his shoulders as he makes his debut with his first match coming against New South Wales.

Shibasaki knows just how special this moment is, not only because it’s the result of a dream come true after years of diligent work. He remains humble about his achievement, stating, “I’m on a development deal so I have a lot to prove. I am just playing my best footy.”

Looking Forward

As Shibasaki prepares for this momentous event, his outlook portrays a perfect blend of aspiration and appreciation. His business is to make a big splash in this tournament. He wants to set himself up as a dependable member of the Queensland side.

His coaches and teammates have been key players in his journey. Their support drives home the conviction that commitment and pervasive community support can enable anyone—even those who face the most daunting challenges—achieve their dreams. Shibasaki’s tale is an empowering reminder to all future sports stars who must overcome such daunting obstacles in their journeys to glory.
