Tragic Loss of Tim Miles Leaves Motorsports Community in Mourning

Tim Miles, a prominent New Zealand businessman and motor racing entrepreneur, was fatally struck by a bus while riding his bicycle with his wife near Taronga Zoo in Sydney. The untimely death on Sunday morning is a heartbreaking blow for his family and the Australian motorsport landscape. Miles, 50, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Born in Ashburton on New Zealand’s South Island, Miles first followed his lifelong passion as a competitive racing driver. He eventually moved to the other side of the sport’s industry, the business side. In doing so, he became an iconic figure of Australian motorsports. He was instrumental in shepherding the sale of Supercars to Archer Capital in 2011. It was again in 2021 that he played a key role in negotiating its sale to Racing Australia Consolidated Enterprises Pty Ltd.

Miles’ legacy on the world of motorsport cannot be overstated. During his career, he co-owned the Triple Eight Race Engineering team and assisted in the founding of Tasman Motorsport. He partnered with compatriot Brendon Leitch with Melbourne Performance Centre, backed by Audi.

Outside of the things Tim Miles did professionally, the more Tim Miles really loved was being a family man. He is survived by his wife, Tracy, and their two daughters, Caley and Erin. His family shared their grief in a statement, mentioning how deeply his absence will be felt.

“Tim was involved in a tragic and ultimately fatal accident this Sunday morning in Sydney while enjoying one of his favourite hobbies — cycling.” – Tim Miles’ family

Even Miles’ employer saddened by his death Supercars Australia put out a statement. Of course, they remembered his incredible influence on the game and the connections he made during his career.
