Relief Efforts Intensify as Texas Faces Devastating Floods

In the aftermath of historic flooding throughout Texas, several national and local organizations have put emergency response efforts into action to support those impacted. The American Red Cross has joined forces with local partners to establish emergency shelters. They are currently delivering essential commodities such as food, emergency relief supplies, and cash assistance to affected people.

Flooding has caused FEMA, state and local agencies, and nonprofits to engage in a coordinated effort to avoid leaving behind the most vulnerable. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has sent personnel to the afflicted region. In the days following Harvey, the Coast Guard joined their Texas first responders in conducting search and rescue operations, saving hundreds stranded by the rising floodwaters.

“Our hearts are heavy as we witness the devastating impact of the recent floods in Texas,” stated a representative from the organization. They emphasized their commitment to supporting affected communities during this difficult time: “The loss of life and destruction are truly heartbreaking. Our hearts are with these impacted communities on this catastrophic day and the days that follow.

In Central Texas, World Central Kitchen, founded by chef José Andrés, has mobilized to provide meals for first responders and victims. Our volunteers are working around the clock to source food and water as we transition into this crisis mode of response.

Texas’ San Antonio-based supermarket chain H-E-B has greatly increased the stakes. They deployed a mobile kitchen to feed evacuees in Ingram and Hunt. The commercially successful company, which has deep historical roots in Kerrville where it was originally founded, reiterated its commitment to helping its community. “Kerrville, where our company was started, and the Hill Country have a special place in the heart of our H-E-B family,” said a spokesperson. “As part of our initial outreach there, we are working closely with the Red Cross, local officials, and first responders to support their needs.”

H-E-B has taken its philanthropy much further than Kerrville. In addition to Austin, they’ve deployed resources to San Angelo, Marble Falls, and a number of other impacted communities. “Our teams are staying close to the hardest-hit areas, and we will continue to provide needed support as these tragic situations evolve,” the spokesperson added.

As communities continue to deal with the lasting effects of the floods, mental health assistance will be just as important. The American Red Cross encourages anyone struggling with emotional distress to reach out for help: “If you are struggling with the emotional toll of this disaster, please remember, you are not alone. Call SAMHSA at (800) 985-5990 or text 988 to connect with a trained mental health professional.”

President Donald Trump has responded to the crisis by signing a disaster declaration for Kerr County, which will facilitate federal assistance for recovery efforts.

The coordinated response from local organizations, national agencies, and community members demonstrates a collective commitment to recovery in the face of adversity. As this scene played out in real-time, these initiatives reminded us that love and support are key ingredients when rebuilding the communities impacted by these disasters.
