James O’Connor Returns to Wallabies for Historic Lions Series

James O’Connor, a long-time wonderkid of Australian rugby, earned selection in the 36-player squad. He’s expected to play in the next British and Irish Lions Test series. At 35 years old, O’Connor last donned the number 10 jersey during the Lions’ previous tour of Australia in 2013. Being selected in the squad provides him an opportunity to become one of the few Wallabies to win a World Cup. He would be sharing this honour with fellow player James Slipper, as both have played in two Lions series.

The Munster lock hasn’t featured in Test rugby since 2022. His most recent showcase – with the Super Rugby powerhouse Crusaders in New Zealand – brought a terrific talent to the forefront. He was instrumental in the team’s first Super Rugby championship victory. This strong performance was a testament to his ability and know-how at such a high level of competition.

The opening Test of the series against the British and Irish Lions starts at Lang Park in Brisbane. Save the date for Saturday, July 19! The second of those games is on home turf, at the storied Melbourne Cricket Ground on July 26. The series will conclude at Sydney’s Stadium Australia on August 2. O’Connor’s experience will be crucial though, as the Wallabies try to re-establish their national superiority against one of their biggest rivals.

O’Connor is the latest high profile name to join a deep roster of Reds, Waratahs, Force and Brumbies stars. His mates on attack have included high talent backs such as Jake Gordon, Tate McDermott, Nic White and Ben Donaldson. Aside from these backs, the most important players in the engines room are forwards Matt Faessler, Billy Pollard and captain Will Skelton.

O’Connor’s selection among the 33 backs for this elite series is an incredible honor. His leadership and experience will be key for the younger talent on the team. His previous experience doing so against top-tier international competition will be a huge asset. The Wallabies have begun their preparations for the brutality and physicality they will face against the British and Irish Lions.

With less than a month to go, excitement is high ahead of that first match. O’Connor’s return to the Wallabies is an inspiring story of resilience and testament to the depth of talent within Australian rugby. The new series will surely be an exciting competition. With all eyes on Lang Park, the rugby world will hold its breath as O’Connor again takes to the field.
