Deputy Tina Bury Sets Priorities for Long-Term Care and Social Issues

Deputy Tina Bury celebrates her new appointment as chair of the committee supervising the island’s longterm care in Guernsey. She’s wasted no time in identifying key urgent priorities she intends to address. Interview on BBC Radio Guernsey, where she told her constituents she is focused on establishing a sustainable model for long-term care. In her confirmation, she made it her “absolute priority.” Bury reminded everyone just how urgent the problem is. He noted that according to projections, funding for long-term care is projected to run out in the very near future.

Bury said we’re at a tipping point. It’s getting extremely urgent at this point,” she said, emphasizing the great current need for action. She really wanted to drive home the importance of working together. Solving our long-term care crisis will require a strong, united push from all of these committees. This was a three committee workload,” she said, highlighting the importance of collaboration especially between the policy and resources and health and social care committees.

Aside from long-term care, Deputy Bury elaborated on her dismay in domains where Guernsey is behind other jurisdictions. She pointedly alleged that lack of paid parental leave was the biggest obstacle. She added that the island is “definitely really, really lagging behind” in this regard. Bury pointed out that similar jurisdictions have gone much further in taking action on parental leave. The implication was that Guernsey would find it relatively inexpensive and simple to catch up with their example and forge ahead.

Bury isn’t stopping with paid parental leave. He intends to finalise reforms to the social security contributions system and put priority on the next phase of the anti-discrimination legislation. She reiterated in no uncertain terms that we can’t push this stage back any further. Her dedication to promoting fair and just treatment among industry, housing, environment, and financing sectors is evident.

As Bury addresses these challenges directly, she is committed to finding ways to make everyone in her burgeoning community of Guernsey better off. She hopes to tackle issues such as long-term care and parental leave. In doing so, she hopes to connect the island’s policies with those of other, similar regions and raise the quality of life for all of the island’s citizens.
