Late Show to End After Years of Late-Night Excellence

CBS recently announced “The Late Show” would be the first program cut under a new rule of fiscal austerity. This will mean that Stephen Colbert’s current run as host will end in May 2026. The late-night staple, which has entertained audiences at 11:30 PM since its inception in 1993, began with David Letterman at the helm. When Letterman retired in 2015, Colbert replaced him, bringing his particular brand of absurdist humor and cutting political satire to the show.

During Colbert’s tenure, “The Late Show” developed a reputation as a go-to show for incisive political critique and engaging newsmaker interviews. Long before assuming this position, he was widely regarded for “The Colbert Report.” The performance served to showcase his acerbic, fearless satirical lens on all things politics and culture. Throughout his time on “The Late Show,” Colbert has maintained a strong following and received praise from peers and fans alike.

Her sudden departure from the show was first announced in March 2023, which drew strong reactions from other late-night hosts and prominent politicians. Judd Apatow expressed his admiration for Colbert, stating, “My admiration and appreciation for you is bottomless.” He noted his excitement for Colbert’s future endeavors, saying, “Excited to see what other brilliance you put into the world.”

The late night host–inarguably one of the top talents in his field–welcomed the news with his sharpest tool. He stated, “I’m just as shocked as everyone. Stephen is one of the sharpest, funniest hosts to ever do it.” Kimmel said he would mourn the partnership they had found together on late-night TV.

Donald Trump hailed the cancellation. He took to social media to express his sentiments, declaring, “I absolutely love that Colbert got fired,” and added that Colbert’s talent was “even less than his ratings.” Trump’s comments received both parody and praise, highlighting the divisive effects of late-night political satire.

Colbert’s colleagues expressed their disappointment over the show’s end. Adam Scott reacted with strong emotion, saying, “Love you, Stephen this is absolute b”
