Southwest Airlines SW, the Dallas-based carrier known for its no-frills, low-cost flights, is going through a radical transformation. Beginning on July 29, 2025, they will begin rolling out assigned seating. The airline describes this as increasing customer flexibility and comfort. This decision is an important step to further strengthen its competitive advantage in the aviation cluster. The airline will deploy the new assigned seating service, beginning with scheduled operations on January 27, 2026. This adjustment represents a sea change in the group boarding approach.

For the first time in 53 years, patrons are now able to pick and choose assigned seats from a selection. Travelers can select premium seats with additional legroom, as well as preferred and standard seats. This mix provides them with much more leverage at the time of booking. This plan aims to address the wide-ranging needs of riders. It ensures a more rewarding and fulfilling travel experience for all Americans.

New Group-Based Boarding Process

On Jan. 27, 2026, Southwest Airlines will begin boarding passengers in groups. This policy change will happen alongside the rollout of assigned seating. This approach is designed to make the boarding process more efficient by allowing customers seated near the back of the plane to board first. According to Southwest Airlines, “optimized for assigned seating and will prioritize Customers into groups based on seat location, beginning with Extra Legroom seats in boarding Groups 1-2.”

By categorizing passengers into groups of different boarding experiences, the airline hopes to make the boarding process more streamlined. This new process should go a long way in reducing gate congestion and boosting efficiency across the board.
