Threads, the new social media platform from Meta, just recorded a crowning achievement. It now has over 400 million monthly active users! However, this recent increase may obscure a historically impressive growth story. It has changed a lot since its initial release two years ago as an alternative to Twitter, now called X.
As of late-June 2025, Threads’ mobile app on iOS and Android has seen 115.1 million daily active users. This is a truly incredible uptick of 127.8% from last year. In fact, in merely the last three months alone, the platform boasted an increase of 50 million monthly users. This extremity showcases its lightning-fast acceptance among social media aficionados.
In April 2025, Threads just completed an incredible break by crossing 350 million regular monthly energetic individuals. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently toasted this major achievement. The platform is still growing every day. Yet today, it finds itself in a unique position to seriously challenge X’s grip on the social media landscape. Overall, X now claims 600 million monthly active users and 132 million daily active users. It has been hit hard with a 15.2% drop from the same point last year.
Threads has recently released fantastic new features to enhance user experience. Users today are being treated to DMs, integrations in the fediverse, custom feeds, and ways artificial intelligence can enhance their experience. These improvements have doubled user engagement. This drop has led to Threads’ daily active users now coming close to X’s mobile app daily active users.
Adam Mosseri, Instagram’s chief, has welcomed the trajectory of Threads. He applauds the expanding user community that has fully adopted the platform.
“It’s been quite the ride over the last two years. This started as a zany idea to compete with Twitter, and has evolved into a meaningful platform that fosters the open exchange of perspectives. I’m grateful to all of you for making this place what it is today. There’s so much work to do from our side, more to come.” – Adam Mosseri
Despite Threads maintaining a smaller presence in web visits, recording 6.9 million average daily visits compared to X’s 145.8 million, its rapid user growth reflects a changing dynamic in the social media marketplace.
