Louisiana’s Attorney General Liz Murrill has initiated a lawsuit against the popular online gaming platform Roblox, citing significant concerns regarding the safety of minors. Roblox is a free social platform with more than 111 million monthly active users. It’s been under fire for apparently putting user growth and profitability over the safety of children.
The lawsuit alleges that the predatory environment perpetuated by Roblox “enables sexual predators to prosper, collaborate, target and abuse children.” Murrill contends that the company has failed to adopt sufficient safety measures to protect its underage users. The suit alleges that their 13-year-old daughter was groomed and assaulted by an adult predator on Roblox. This run-in forced her into being controlled and circulated through several states for the purpose of trafficking.
Roblox simply hopes to give users the virtual universe that let’s you create, play, and share experiences with friends helps them imagine.
Child Safety Policy
The platform has a zero-tolerance policy towards minor exploitation. Critics say it lacks sufficient guardrails to truly keep this exploitation from happening. The company restricts children under 13 from chatting with other users outside of games unless they have explicit parental permission.
In the runaway hit game’s defense, after facing increased criticism, Roblox has introduced more extensive safety features. The platform recently implemented a great new feature to help! Now, teens from 13 to 17 have to create a video selfie for age verification if they want to enjoy open chatting with their trusted connections. That’s perhaps why Roblox is deep into building its own artificial intelligence system. This unique system’s goal is to identify early warning signs of child endangerment, such as the use of sexually exploitative language.
In her op-ed, Murrill takes it a step further, arguing that even these measures go too far. He points out that there is no clear age verification procedure at initial sign-up. She argues that without safety measures, Roblox is putting the safety of Louisiana’s children at risk. The Attorney General has even suggested that Roblox should be shut down until it can ensure a safer environment for its users.
Yet in the first half of 2025, Roblox was very proactive on this front, filing 1,200 reports of potential child grooming attempts! They funneled these reports to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. As we explained here, this dangerous and misleading statistic should alarm everyone about the amount of harmful content that exists on TikTok.
Robert Livingston Parish Sheriff Jason Ard said that his office has investigated a number of cases related to Roblox. Yet, at least as of today, none of these incidents have resulted in a single arrest related to their targeting.
