Duolingo’s CEO Addresses AI Strategy Amid Workforce Changes

Luis von Ahn, the CEO of Duolingo, recently announced directly that the company is moving towards an “AI-first” model. This still-unfathomable decision has caused upset among the agency’s core stakeholders. He later acknowledged that his announcement did not provide adequate context. Critics have rightfully criticized him for not providing an adequate explanation for what such a strategic shift would mean.

In a recent statement, von Ahn emphasized that while Duolingo has reduced its contractor workforce, it has not laid off any full-time employees. He calmed worried stakeholders by assuring them that making money is not the goal. He added, “As a publicly traded company, people think we’re just here to watermelon.” Or that we’re looking to replace humans with whips and chains. And that was completely wrong.”

Von Ahn tells CNBC Make It that Duolingo’s own contractor workforce has fluctuated, based on shifting operational needs. The recently appointed CEO shares this enthusiasm for AI’s potential to create better language learning experiences. They share a commitment to deepening the company’s focus on bringing new, advanced technology to market.

Once a week on Friday mornings Duolingo’s staff members are encouraged to pursue new innovative projects based using AI technologies, promoting creativity and breakthroughs within the company. This new initiative is a clear indication of the company’s leadership commitment to keeping it at the cutting edge of educational technology. Despite the backlash regarding its AI-first strategy, von Ahn noted that these criticisms have not significantly affected Duolingo’s financial performance.

One edtech company diving really deep into AI adoption is Duolingo. This important step is suggested to improve its service offerings and maintain competitiveness in a growing digital-native education industry. With Von Ahn’s bullish outlook on AI, this seems to present a longer-term vision for the company, using new technology to make activities users already enjoy feel new again.
