OpenAI Introduces ChatGPT GO Subscription Plan in India

OpenAI today announced a new subscription plan for its wildly popular ChatGPT service–ChatGPT GO. This plan is currently priced at ₹399 per month, or roughly $4.60. The goal, according to Google, is to bring the AI-powered chatbot to users across India in their preferred language. ChatGPT Chatbot’s popularity is going through the roof! It has since added more than 700 million users weekly across the planet, a testament to the platform’s rapid growth. It crossed the 500 million mark in March.

ChatGPT GO brings more capabilities to users when compared to the current Plus Plan of ₹1,999 (roughly $23) per month. This new offering not only enhances your experience—it supercharges it! Subscribers are getting a tenfold increase in messaging, image generation, and files uploaded from the current free tier. Moreover, ChatGPT GO grants users twice as much memory over the regular free version, making their experience better overall.

Nick Turley, Vice President at OpenAI and head of ChatGPT, highlighted the impact of affordability in this launch.

“Making ChatGPT more affordable has been a key ask from users! We’re rolling out Go in India first and will learn from feedback before expanding to other countries.” – Nick Turley

The pricing strategy aligns with OpenAI’s recent decision to enable local currency pricing for all its plans shortly before the launch of ChatGPT GO. This is unique, as the new approach allows users to authenticate payments seamlessly using UPI, India’s widespread payments ecosystem. It makes the payment process a whole lot easier for subscribers too.

OpenAI is limiting ChatGPT GO to only users in India for now. They are looking to roll out to additional regions as soon as they collect feedback from users and determine stronger demand. Together, this new plan comes at the same time that ChatGPT usage booms in India. The spike comes on the heels of an expanded and improved image generator feature that rolled out earlier this year.

Even before the official announcement, Tibor Blaho, a software engineer at OpenAI, had hinted at the arrival of the new subscription plan and several of its advantages. The launch of ChatGPT GO marks a significant step toward making advanced AI technology more inclusive and accessible to a broader audience.
