Community Mourns Loss of Cleveland Couple in Tragic Car Accident

Our Cleveland community is simply devastated by the tragic loss of Donald and Maria Nunney. They were killed in an auto accident on August 15 as they were en route to meet their oldest son for lunch. The then-55-year-old husband and 50-year-old wife were en route to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In a moment, their car left the freeway and hit more than a dozen trees.

Donald and Maria Nunney were devoted parents to their four children: Noah, 19; Diego, 18; Lucia, 15; and Leo, 9. Noah was to be our lunch date that day. Sadly, Lucia and Leo were riding in the car at the time of the crash, but thankfully both survived, albeit with severe injuries. Diego was not in the car during the collision.

In the aftermath of this immense loss, relatives are remembering how much both parents adored their children.

“Don was a loving, doting father. He loved Maria more than anything in the world, and he was just there for everybody,” – Meredith Nunney McCarthy, Donald’s sister-in-law.

Sandro Galindo, the brother of Maria Nunney, recalled that his sister was full of life, and that her laughter was contagious. He painted beautiful vivid images of her beauty and disposition.

“Maria pretty much lit up every room she was in. She had a big laugh,” – Sandro Galindo.

The Nunneys benefit from a strong network on both sides of their family. This powerful support gives them much-needed assistance, especially during these tough economic times.

“They have a really good support system with both sides of the family, so we’re doing the best we can to be there for them,” – Meredith Nunney McCarthy noted.

As the community reflects on the Nunneys’ legacy, they remember Donald and Maria not just as parents but as individuals who deeply impacted those around them. Our thoughts are with the family as they enter the long journey ahead in dealing with tragedy and recovery from this great loss.
