Tragic Loss on Set of Emily in Paris as Assistant Director Dies

Diego Borella, 47, the assistant director for the Netflix series “Emily in Paris” died suddenly. He was on location in Venice, Italy, filming when he passed away. The tragic incident occurred on Thursday, August 21, around 7:00 p.m. local time at the Hotel Danieli, where Borella was preparing for a final scene of the show’s fifth season.

Borella, who was locally-hired as a third AD on the production, tragically collapsed on set. Medical personnel on set rushed to revive him, but he was pronounced dead on the scene. His death was first reported by local outlets. It was picked up immediately by La Repubblica, Il Messaggero and Corriere della Sera, as well as English-language outlets.

In a statement to ABC News, a spokesperson from Paramount Television Studios confirmed Borella’s death as “devastating.”

“We are deeply saddened to confirm the sudden passing of a member of the Emily in Paris production family,” – Paramount Television Studios spokesperson

In response to this tragic incident, filming on the fifth and final season of “Emily in Paris” was briefly halted. In the wake of this tragedy, the cast and crew were given all the time they needed to grieve and support each other. Production returned to work Saturday, Aug. 23.
