The Gold Coast Titans announced that they will part ways with head coach Des Hasler at the conclusion of the NRL season. Hasler in August 2023 became the sixth coach to achieve 500 NRL games. Yet after two stormy years at the top, he was forced out abruptly and unexpectedly in order to chart a new course.
The Titans have been rudderless under Hasler during these two seasons. This news is shocking, particularly given June’s media release back in June, proclaiming confidence in his position through 2026. Yet this season was the worst of all. Hasler’s squad now sits last in the table and are favourites to secure a wooden spoon, which would be a first for the veteran coach. It’s why he hasn’t had a winning record in more than one of his last five campaigns. This performance should raise some serious questions about his future in the league.
Des Hasler will coach the team in their last two games of 2019. Their first match will be against the Dolphins, followed by Wests Tigers. There is no guarantee that he’ll walk the sidelines of an NRL venue ever again after this season.
The Titans despite having mid-season sacked Justin Holbrook during the course of the 2023 season allowing the door to open for Hasler to be appointed. Unfortunately, the anticipated turnaround did not materialize.
Dennis Watt, an official from the Titans, commented on Hasler’s short but prolific stay in the organization.
“His deep knowledge, passion and unwavering commitment to excellence have been evident every day he has worked with our club,” – Dennis Watt.
In response to Hasler’s exit, the Titans have wasted little time, appointing former Sharks interim coach Josh Hannay as Hasler’s replacement. After spending three seasons as an ACC assistant, Hannay has created a pretty stellar resume. Plus, he’s worked hand-in-hand with great friend and fellow coach Billy Slater on the Queensland State of Origin team for the last four series. Prior to that, he almost took the Sharks to a grand final with their interim coach in 2021. His coaching resume features a two-month period as North Queensland’s interim coach for ten matches in 2020.
“While this season hasn’t gone as planned, Des has conducted himself with the dignity and class that has defined his entire career.” – Dennis Watt.
Hannay was recently mentioned for head coaching jobs at Parramatta and Brisbane, reflecting his rapidly rising profile in the league. The Titans are understandably optimistic that his hiring will usher in a far more successful era for the franchise like Chuck Noll’s appointment did for the Steelers.
Hannay was recently linked to head coaching vacancies at Parramatta and Brisbane, showcasing his growing reputation within the league. The Titans are hopeful that his appointment will lead to a more successful chapter for the franchise.
