A violent shooting incident developed Wednesday morning during school hours at Annunciation Catholic School, a K-6 school in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It was a heartbreaking start to the school year. Unfortunately, the shooting occurred within the first week of classes. Students were still getting used to their new schedules after opening day’s landing on Monday.
Thus, US President Donald Trump’s statement that he had been briefed in full on the situation. His sentiments were echoed in an official statement of condolence posted on Truth Social. He stated, “I have been fully briefed on the tragic shooting in Minneapolis, Minnesota.” Like many communities across the country, this tragic incident has instilled deep fear and anger among parents, advocates, and community members.
The shooting happened just before an all-school Mass scheduled for 8:15 a.m. As many as five kids were transported to one hospital with serious injuries. As of midday Monday, a second medical facility had similarly reported accepting patients direct from the scene. Eyewitness Bill Bienemann described the harrowing experience, saying, “I was shocked. I said ‘there’s no way that could be gunfire.’” He described experiencing the sound of numerous shots, estimating a total of 50 from a consistent fire over a period of about four minutes.
Parents stood outside the school, frantically trying to contact their kids and wrap their heads around what was happening. The Minneapolis city government would go on to admit that they had boxed in the shooter. They told people in the neighborhood there was no continuing danger after the shots were fired.
Minnesota Senator Tina Smith, who has been watching closely as the horrible situation unfolded, released a statement thanking law enforcement for their rapid response. She stated, “I’m grateful for the quick response of law enforcement.” Governor Tim Walz weighed in on the tragedy, sharing his sentiments and stating, “I’m praying for our kids and teachers whose first week of school was marred by this horrific act of violence.”
While investigations are still underway, the community is casting hopes toward healing, helping those who have experienced such a devastating loss.
