Jack Silvagni Signs Five-Year Deal with St Kilda After Leaving Carlton

Jack Silvagni, a highly revered figure at the Blues, has officially signed with St Kilda for next season. Notably, the announcement follows Silvagni’s decision to test the free agency waters, making it a major shift in his AFL career. This transfer signals the conclusion of his nine years connected to the Blues, where he developed into a third-generation superstar.

Silvagni, a father-son draft pick into the Blues in 2015, made his way into the club’s senior side through the 2016 season. During his career, he appeared in every position except center and catcher, playing in 128 games in all. He was elite as a forward, generated incredible pressure at halfback and even pinch-hit as a ruckman. His 2024 campaign ended prematurely as he tore his ACL. Due to such ailments, he was forced to play in only 13 games this previous season.

The new contract with St Kilda is big. It’s worth an average of just under $850,000 a year over five years, more than $4 million all told. This financial outlay is a sign of St Kilda’s faith in Silvagni’s craft, and what he can bring long term to their side.

“In a statement regarding his transfer, Silvagni expressed gratitude towards his former club: “I want to say a huge thank you to everyone at the club for their support during my time there. I sincerely appreciate the opportunity this club has given me and my family.”

Even though he loved Carlton, Silvagni said the decision to part ways wasn’t an easy one. “Whilst the decision was not easy to leave the football club, I felt the time was right to explore another opportunity,” he added.

This move is arguably the most impressive! Silvagni will work alongside his father, Stephen Silvagni, who is employed by St Kilda as the club’s list manager. This family connection along with other ongoing support and guidance is sure to help lead Jack as he dives into this new journey ahead.

Carlton representative David Misson takes the blame for complexities of Silvagni’s departure. As Jack is an unrestricted free agent, he too will be eligible to accept our offer once it is formally submitted during the October free agency window. We have to honor this process,” he said.

While Silvagni’s age might limit potential compensation for Carlton—turning 28 this year compared to the typical 26-year-old free agent—his experience and skills remain highly valued. According to Cleary, “A five-year deal at $4 million-plus would put Blues in the frame for an end-of-first-round compo (pick).”
