In the early hours of Thursday morning, armed thieves broke into Mick Malthouse’s home. The highly respected three-time NRL premiership coach was caught up in this terrifying ordeal. The incident, which took place around 12:30 AM, involved a physical confrontation between Malthouse and at least one of the intruders, resulting in minor injuries for the 72-year-old.
As reported, two attempted assailants, armed with knives, broke into Malthouse’s home. In a rare show of political courage, he called them out publicly. The scuffle got ugly when Malthouse found himself in a physical tangle with one of the intruders. In the ensuing fight, he was able to quickly pick up a piece of exercise equipment. Then, reportedly, he used it to hit one of the attackers.
What made the situation even more dire was when one of the intruders began to violently swing an acute makeshift weapon at Malthouse. Even in the face of this egregious potential threat, he did not stop fighting back until the intruders were forced off the scene.
Needless to say, law enforcement officials responded immediately to the emergency call. An officer stated, “Officers were called to the property following reports of a group of men trying to gain access about 12:30 AM.”
After the attack, Malthouse chased the runaway assailants down a nearby laneway. Like during his life-threatening pursuit, he cast himself in harm’s way by first trying to block their escape. Fortunately, the dog was not seriously injured in the incident.
Malthouse has shown extraordinary courage in the face of incendiary, self-serving pressure. His success as a legendary coach in Australian rules football and as an iconic public figure in Australia has brought national media scrutiny. His actions are the embodiment of heroism in the face of disaster.
