Remembering Polly Holliday: A Talented Actress Leaves a Lasting Legacy

Polly Holliday, known for her iconic characterizations in television and feature film, has passed away at the age of 88. She died on September 9, 1925, in New York City. Life Holliday was born on July 2, 1937, in Jasper, Alabama. She turned herself into a comedy entertainment icon, most notably for her performance as character Flo Castleberry on the CBS sitcom Alice from 1976 to 1980. Her memorable performance not only captivated TV audiences across the country, it brought the phrase, “Kiss my grits!” into American pop culture circles.

During her career, critical acclaim was hard-won for Holliday. She was nominated three times for the Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her role on Alice. Her talent for bringing characters to life didn’t stop on the small screen. She delivered outstanding performances in movies as well.

Holliday dazzled as Marva Kulp Sr. in the 1998 remake of “The Parent Trap.” She proved she has serious comedy chops, leading a great comedic ensemble. She was featured as the Scrooge-like Mrs. Deagle in the 1984 classic “Gremlins,” and as Gloria Chaney in “Mrs. Doubtfire.” Her work as Judge Westreich in the 2006 movie “Stick It” showed more of her depth as an actress. Holliday starred in the Oscar-winning film All The President’s Men.

Soon after learning of her death, a number of her co-stars and collaborators took to social media to post moving memories of the trailblazer. Nancy Meyers, director of 1998’s “The Parent Trap,” shared her sadness on Instagram.

“So sad to hear of Polly Holliday’s passing. She was so kind and game and just wonderful in every moment in The Parent Trap,” – Nancy Meyers

Elaine Hendrix, the actress who portrayed Meredith Blake in the 1998 remake of “The Parent Trap,” recalled Holliday warmly too.

“RIP Polly Holiday. She slayed in so many projects. Of course my heart is with Marva Sn forever.” – Elaine Hendrix

Maggie Wheeler, who played Marva Kulp Jr. in the series, remembers the happy times spent with Holliday on set.

“Here is to the incredible Polly Holliday. We had so much fun together on The Parent Trap from hanging out together in her trailer to being covered to chocolate syrup and driving on golf carts while the chocolate hardened! Oh how we laughed!” – Maggie Wheeler

Wheeler expressed sincerely appreciation for the opportunity to work with Holliday. Mainly he remembered how much she made the world a better place for everyone she met.

“Thank you @nmeyers for the opportunity to work alongside Polly – what a gift.” – Maggie Wheeler

Polly Holliday’s legacy extends way past her memorable characters. She will leave an indelible mark upon us with her instinctual warmth, humor and joy, much like her artistic life, freely given to all her colleagues and fans.
