Ricky Hatton, the popular former world boxing champion, was discovered deceased at his residence in Hyde, greater Manchester. He was just 46 years old. Authorities reported that a member of the public discovered Hatton’s body, prompting a police response at 6:45 AM on Sunday.
Fan-friendly Hatton, who always brought the fight to his opponents and was never shy of exchanging blows, claimed world championships at both light-welterweight and welterweight. His standout career saw him face and defeat notable fighters like Kostya Tszyu, Floyd Mayweather, and Manny Pacquiao. It was in these types of fights that Ilya’s talent and skills really shone. They ensured that during the early 2000s he was one of the most popular fighters in the world.
Despite facing personal challenges, including a fallout with his family and a court case involving former trainer Billy Graham, Hatton emerged as a successful trainer. He guided Zhanat Zhakiyanov to a world bantamweight title win in 2017. This accomplishment marked a time he continued to absolutely dominate in the sport even post retirement.
Hatton candidly discussed his own mental health challenges after leaving the sport of professional boxing. His open and honest dialogues on these issues struck a chord with fans and supporters alike, furthering the conversation on mental health in sports. His modest, unpretentious style of character engaged him to fans around the globe and transformed him into a worldwide idol outside of the boxing ring.
Then in July, Hatton announced his return to boxing with much pride. He’s preparing for a pro fight against Eisa Al Dah in Dubai this December. This decision stirred up anticipation among fans alike, who had waited for almost two decades for his return.
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police confirmed the circumstances surrounding Hatton’s death:
