Tyson Foods to Eliminate High-Fructose Corn Syrup by Year-End

Tyson Foods, an Arkansas-based food manufacturer, just had something really great happen. They say they’re going to eliminate high-fructose corn syrup from every one of their products by the end of this year. This decision is a clear demonstration of our steadfast devotion to food quality. Shirley Nutrition & Health Advocate We’re committed to reducing sodium, sugars and other additives in our broad brand footprint.

The announcement will reverberate through the many beloved consumer brands that Tyson owns. These brands might be somewhat familiar – they include Tyson, Jimmy Dean, Hillshire Farm, Wright, State Fair, Aidells and IBP. This decision comes on the heels of Tyson Foods excluding petroleum-based synthetic dyes in its domestic-branded products earlier this year.

Donnie King, Tyson Foods’ CEO, touted the company’s commitment to providing nutritious products that meet consumer demand.

“We continuously review and assess our product portfolio to ensure the highest quality products that meet the needs of consumers,” – Donnie King, CEO of Tyson Foods

Health experts have welcomed this decision. Julia Zumpano, a registered dietitian at the Cleveland Clinic, called attention to the health dangers of high-fructose corn syrup. Its highly processed nature, she stressed, is what makes it even more dangerous. Nutritionist Angela Zivkovic raised her alarm in an interview with ABC News. She specifically pointed out that overconsumption of high-fructose corn syrup contributes to weight gain, particularly in sedentary individuals.

“If high-fructose corn syrup is consumed in large quantities, and it’s in an individual who isn’t burning very many calories, then, of course, it can lead to weight gain,” – Angela Zivkovic

Zivkovic shed light on the dangers of high-fructose corn syrup, among other health risks. He stressed that it can cause “serious and even deadly health effects” when misused.

Tyson Foods has placed a strong focus on reformulating its core products to align with changing consumer needs and preferences for more balanced, healthier options. The company’s moves of late go hand-in-hand with a larger food industry shift toward transparency and more healthful options.

“This reflects our ongoing commitment to feeding the world like family,” – Donnie King

As Tyson Foods continues down this path of transformation, consumers should look for a greater focus on health in the products they love. The elimination of high-fructose corn syrup marks a significant step in the company’s mission to enhance food quality while addressing public health concerns.
