Leadership Transition at Nine as Catherine West Steps Down

Catherine West resigning as chair of Nine. Her exit is a parting note that signals the end of nearly ten years on the company’s predominant leadership team. As chair and deputy chair, she has played a crucial leadership role at Nine. West’s leadership has steered the organization through a lot of internal upheaval and churn. She expressed appreciation to her colleagues and the board for standing behind her from the first day she has been in office.

West replaced former Treasurer of Australia Peter Costello as chair of Nine in June 2024 after the latter had provided almost eight years of service. Under West’s leadership, Nine experienced an incredible turnaround, resetting the company on a path of long-term success as they now head into FY26.

Acknowledging Accomplishments

In a statement reflecting on her time at Nine, West remarked, “I am proud to have successfully led the company through a transformational period.” She acted as chair for a year and a half. At NPR, she helped establish strategic direction, and initiation and innovation in media.

The testimony from the outgoing chair pointed to the ways the company is moving in the right direction. “Nine has entered FY26 in an enviable position and based on Peter’s extensive experience, he is ideally placed to continue the momentum,” she added, indicating confidence in her successor.

Peter Tonagh Assumes Leadership

Chief Peter Tonagh will step into chairmanship after Nine’s annual general meeting on November 7. His appointment follows a long tenure of transformational leadership by West and has the potential to position the company for continued success in its next chapter.

Tonagh expressed his enthusiasm for the role. “It’s an honour to be appointed chair-elect of the Nine Board — a great Australian company with a rich heritage and an exciting future,” he stated. His deep experience inside the media industry equips him to address the conflict going forward.

A Grateful Farewell

As she leaves her position, West shared her deep gratitude to her team and board. Her leadership glows with passionate conviction and focused strategic vision. She is confident that these qualities have set the stage for an even greater future, rooted in diversity.

On behalf of the Board, I want to thank Catherine for all she’s contributed. Her leadership, guidance and commitment to Nine have been instrumental in positioning the company for long-term sustainable success. Tonagh remarked, acknowledging West’s significant contributions.
