A suspected gas leak at a local hospital on Friday afternoon has left several staff members feeling nauseated and faint. The event took place in one of the surgery theatre suites, injuring six staff members. Emergency services responded quickly, and the incident is now being thoroughly investigated by Tasmania’s Health Department.
The hospital’s emergency department evaluated three of the impacted staff, all of whom were subsequently released. The depth of anguish caused by this loss cannot be overstated, the hospital said in a statement. They shut down remaining theatres to ensure the safety of patients and staff. Fire crews arrived on the scene around 2:40 PM to assist with ventilation efforts in the affected area.

“Extensive testing has occurred since the incident — including air sampling and testing of medical equipment — which has revealed no abnormalities,” said a spokesperson from the Health Department. This assurance is meant to take the edge off fears from employees and the general public about the lack of safety in the hospital environment.
As a direct impact from this breach, non-urgent planned surgeries had to be cancelled over the weekend. The Health Department spokesperson confirmed, “Non-urgent planned surgery was postponed on Saturday and Sunday, with all patients advised.” The hospital is doing everything it can to safely reschedule these surgeries as quickly as possible and thanks patients for their understanding during this time.

Tasmania’s Health Department is still investigating what caused the suspected gas leak. The spokesperson emphasized that only one theatre was affected by this incident, stating, “All staff and the general public can be reassured that all other areas of the hospital remain operational and unaffected.”
