Production of Spaceballs 2 Begins as Rick Moranis Returns to the Screen

Fans of the cult classic will be doing a little happy dance! Production has officially gotten underway on Spaceballs 2, the long-rumored sequel to the 1987 cult classic. In June, Mel Brooks officially announced the project in a video message. He officially announced the return of many of the original cast members to reprise their fan-favorite roles.

Rick Moranis, legendary for his role as Dark Helmet in our previously mentioned Spaceballs, re-emerging from his retirement from acting in this film. His final live-action role, after all, came in 1997. Today, that blank page became a reality as his casting in “Spaceballs 2” represents a major breakthrough in his career. Daphne Zuniga, Bill Pullman, George Wyner and the legendary Mel Brooks will be accompanying Moranis. Their combined presence, of course, brings instant continuity to the hugely popular franchise.

Josh Greenbaum will direct the feature. Most notably, he is co-creator of the wondrous musical-comedy feature “Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar.” He co-wrote the pilot script with Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez. Josh Gad, Keke Palmer, Lewis Pullman, and Anthony Carrigan fill in for departed franchise stars with exciting new characters. Their inclusion is sure to bring some really cool new elements to the plot!

Beyond that, information about the story of “Spaceballs 2” is still top secret. A press release stated that plot specifics are “being kept under lock, key, and an industrial-strength Schwartz shield,” leaving fans eager for any hints about the narrative direction.

Brooks expressed his excitement about the project, stating, “After 40 years, we asked, ‘What do the fans want?’ Instead, we’re making this movie.” His enthusiasm reflects the dedication to creating a sequel that honors the original while bringing new material to its audience.

As production continues toward a planned big screen release, excitement is building among fans who’ve waited years for this sequel. The original “Spaceballs” won over generations of fans with its sharp, silly spoofing of sci-fi conventions. Naturally, millions of fans are wondering whether “Spaceballs 2” will be able to recapture that same magic.

“May the Schwartz be with you!” – Mel Brooks
