Ben Affleck Reflects on Growth Post-Divorce from Jennifer Lopez

In December, Ben Affleck opened up about his divorce from Jennifer Lopez in a profile interview with GQ. He shared with me important thoughts about the inner work he has done, fostering transformation since their separation. The actor described the dissolution of their marriage as “very grown-up.” In doing so, they kept their cool — despite the media firestorm that engulfed their historic relationship. Affleck’s frank reflections suggest a maturity and self-realization he credits to this transformative period in his life.

My life is really, I think, actually pretty drama-free.” Affleck was intent on hailing complaints about the noise surrounding his life. He acknowledged a lot of folks view his recent divorce as a circus. The truth is, it has launched him into some very meaningful changes for the better. The actor remarked, “I’m sure in your mind you’re thinking, ‘Oh, well, you just got divorced. That’s not drama-free.’” His thoughtful reflection points to a less recognized aspect of facing trauma on a personal level.

The nearly two-decade saga of the former couple began making waves back in 2002, when they started dating. When their engagement ended in 2004, they made headlines once more. Both moved on to have families. Lopez married Marc Anthony, with whom she shares twins Max and Emme, while Affleck wed Jennifer Garner and had three children: Violet, Seraphina, and Samuel. Their paths crossed again years later, culminating in a second engagement and subsequent marriage that lasted until their divorce, which Lopez filed for in August 2024.

Lopez, in Las Vegas attending the American Music Awards, on May 26, 2025. There, she shared candidly about the effects of her divorce. She characterized the experience as “the best of times and the worst of times.” Lopez noted, “I became more self-aware. I am a different person now than I was last year, a year and a half ago.” Her comments show the wealth divorce has been one of the major inflection points in her life.

Beyond the dissolution of their marriage, the two still share a professional bond. Affleck serves as executive producer on Lopez’s new flick, “Kiss of the Spider Woman.” This uplifting documentary sequel made its world premiere at January 2025’s Sundance Film Festival. And yet this was the month in which they signed their divorce agreement. They proved just how solid their support of each other runs at ELLE’s 2023 Women in Hollywood Celebration on December 5, 2023. This emotional chapter of the event served as a reminder of their resilience—despite personal transitions.

It’s great to see both Affleck and Lopez reflecting strength and grace as they continue to move forward with their lives after their divorce. Their reflections shine a light on these complicated, yet beautiful dynamics of building a relationship and the personal growth that can stem from difficult moments.
