Brody Mihocek Joins Melbourne as Unrestricted Free Agent

Brody Mihocek, forward for Collingwood and an All-Australian this year, re-signed on a two-year deal with the Melbourne Football Club last week. He joined them as an unrestricted free agent. The 32-year-old forward leaves behind an excellent eight-year career with the Magpies. In his short time there, he played 159 games and was instrumental in their 2023 premiership success.

Shuffling Mihocek’s transfer also comes at an opportune time for Melbourne. The team would obviously love to add to its under-construction forward corps as it begins a rebuilding process under new coach Stephen King. Mihocek’s addition will provide extra experience and significantly deepen the lineup’s offensive potential. That’s particularly critical considering that after being claimed by Seattle earlier this year, Jamie Elliott re-signed with the team for two more years earlier this month.

Throughout his tenure with Collingwood, Mihocek made a considerable impact, scoring a total of 267 career goals since making his debut in 2018. He did great this past season too! He scored 47 goals, underlining once again that he is one of the most important players in the league.

Collingwood’s list manager, Justin Leppitsch, expressed his support for Mihocek’s decision to join Melbourne, stating, “We respect Brody’s decision to pursue his free agency rights and explore opportunities at Melbourne. We thank him for his contribution to the black and white.”

He further added, “As a 2023 premiership player, Brody will always be a Collingwood person.”

Mihocek’s current contract guarantees he will remain at demons until he is 34. This opportunity is giving him the chance to spread his wealth of projects, knowledge and skillsets with the new team. As first reported on this site by Xander McGuire, Mihocek’s move is now official. He referenced Mihocek’s move as an unrestricted free agent because his contract will come to an end at the conclusion of this campaign.
