U.S. Passport Processing Remains Steady Amid Government Shutdown

The U.S. Department of State has attempted to allay their fears. They assured her that during the ongoing government shutdown, processing U.S. passport applications will continue without interruption. In addition, last fall we launched a new online renewal system. Today, adults 25 and older can renew their passports online, simplifying the application process, saving time and money.

The new online renewal system has proved to be a tremendous help in this regard for applicants and staff. For one, it cuts out the inconvenience of sending in a check. You save them from needing an in-person appointment too, so the process is more convenient and equitable for everyone. This new digital process streamlines the application process, empowering applicants to complete and submit their applications straight from their mobile device.

U.S. passport processing times as of June 2023 have reverted to their usual pre-pandemic paces. Routine applications are expected to be processed within four to six weeks, while expedited requests typically take two to three weeks.

Even with the current federal government shutdown, the State Department was quick to reassure that passport applications will still be processed. Several members of Congress expressed confidence in this continuity, stating, “Passport applications should still continue to be processed during a shutdown.”

U.S. passport operations are funded entirely by application fees. While passport offices in local government buildings are not affected, some locations may close or otherwise lack accessibility due to the shutdown. This problematic state of affairs would impact applicants most in need of support from these facilities.

The surging backlog in passport applications has bolstered the critical role the U.S. Postal Service can and must perform. It helps guarantee that applicants will get important documents in a timely manner.

Additionally, travelers are now able to use automated passport kiosks at all major airports for check-in, making their travel experience that much easier. Protective agencies remain protected. The Department of Homeland Security included affected agencies like Customs and Border Protection and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services will retain the majority of their personnel during the shutdown. This strategic decision ensures that vital public services don’t miss a beat.

“The continuance of operations in such instances will be treated on a case-by-case basis by the Office of the Under Secretary for Management,” – The State Department

As the government navigates the shutdown, it remains crucial for citizens to stay informed about their passport and visa needs. The State Department, and Congress as a whole, have given these reassurances. They spell out that people should not face undue delays when they apply for or renew their passports.
