New Housing Development Approved for Littleport

East Cambridgeshire District Council has now formally approved detailed planning applications for an eco-friendly new housing development on the outskirts of Littleport, a Fenland town. This momentous decision will permit the development of 286 new homes. It represents the northern stage of a much bigger development in the works on the edge of the county seat of 29,000 residents. Construction is already underway on the southern phase, which will include 360 homes.

The new development will be built behind Grange Lane. It’s just a drop in the bucket, but it does help address the mounting regional housing shortage. The approved plans include not only residential units but 34 self-build plots, allowing future homeowners to design and construct their own homes.

The new development will provide much more than homes alone. It will have all the features of a great community, including public open space, play spaces for children, local retail and business amenities. New active travel routes will be created to boost walking and cycling, supporting residents in making healthier choices.

The council’s decision is a testament to their dedication to improving the vitality of Littleport both socially and economically.

“The proposed development would bring about social, economic and environmental benefits through the delivery of an allocated site, making a significant contribution to the district’s housing supply and affordable housing delivery.” – The officer’s report

As detailed in the officer’s report, the impacts of this intervention reach far beyond the provision of affordable housing. New local retail and business facilities will provide an enormous economic shot-in-the arm to the local economy. At the same time, quality public open space and active travel infrastructure will significantly improve community health impacts.

“The economic and environmental benefits flowing from the scheme, including the provision of local retail/business facilities, active travel routes and public open space, will also mitigate for the scheme’s impacts as well as providing wider benefits for residents within Littleport itself.” – The officer’s report

At just under £17 million with the construction of both phases together, this development will be a real vote of confidence in Littleport’s future. The local council hopes that these new homes will meet housing need. Equally important to them is their desire to foster an engaging community culture.
