Bob Ross Paintings Set for Auction to Support Public Television Programming

Bob Ross’s legacy continues to grow, as thirty of his most famous paintings prepare to go under the hammer. The proceeds will go to public television stations that have been hit by recent cuts in federal funding. Bonhams is putting together an especially hot auction in Los Angeles on November 11. It will be featuring three monumental artworks by Ross—an amazing opportunity for fans and collectors alike!

From these artistic adventures came most of the thirty paintings planned for auction. This iconic TV show with painter extraordinaire Bob Ross ran through the 80s and 90s. Ross painted each canvas in less than thirty minutes. This one-of-a-kind ability to mesmerize audiences is on full display in his tranquil landscapes, dominated by mighty mountain vistas and peaceful lake scenes.

Ross spent his life ensuring art belonged to the people. His enthusiasm connected deeply when he was alive and remains a touchstone for creatives to this day. His television program, The Joy of Painting, became a staple on public television stations from the U.S. to Japan and Mongolia. It captivated and inspired a nation—millions of viewers—to unleash their creativity.

The thirty paintings which comprise the auction span Ross’s career, and document his evolution as an artist while maintaining his unique signature style. The combined appraised value of these works is estimated to be between $850,000 and $1.4 million. Bonhams has an established track record with Ross’s earlier works. As for mountains and lakes, they successfully auctioned two such paintings from the early ‘90s for $114,800 and $95,750 respectively.

After the first auction in Los Angeles, subsequent auctions will be held in London, New York City, Boston, and online. These events present a unique opportunity for collectors and fans to own a piece of Bob Ross history while supporting public television programming that enriches communities.
