The Ongoing Conflict: Israel’s Military Actions and the Palestinian State Debate

The situation in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas has drastically worsened over the past weeks, garnering international condemnation and concern. The Israeli government, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has faced criticism for its military actions in Gaza, which have resulted in high civilian casualties. In addition, recent Israeli reports estimate that as many as 20 hostages may still survive in Gaza. This new development adds to the quickly complicating realities of the conflict’s escalation. The U.S. has clearly done the opposite. Even President Joe Biden referred to Israel’s bombing campaigns as “indiscriminate,” recognizing the catastrophic impacts on civilians.

Israel dismisses these arguments and claims that its military actions are an inevitable result of Hamas’s strategy of using civilians as human shields by hiding within civilian populations. This tactic makes any military operation more difficult and is responsible for many tragic civilian casualties. Critics assert that Israel could have employed more strategic measures to target Hamas officials and fighters, potentially sparing innocent lives. These actions have caused an already devastated Gaza to become virtually unlivable and spurred widespread calls for a humanitarian ceasefire and aid.

The Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza has escalated to shocking proportions, prompting grave concern from global communities and human rights organizations. Israel’s relentless bombing campaigns have been catastrophic, with an average of 28 children killed every day. This statistic underscores the toll that the conflict is taking on the most vulnerable populations, prompting widespread outrage and demands for action.

As multiple experts on Gaza have explained, the decades of military operations have made it so that Gaza is virtually uninhabitable. The infrastructural damage has been staggering. Access to basic necessities, including clean water, food, and medical care, now have reached all-time lows. The United Nations has repeatedly and urgently called for full, immediate humanitarian access to the region. Meanwhile, thousands of civilians continue to experience far-reaching devastation as hostilities rage on.

In light of these imploring conditions, several international actors, humanitarian workers and prominent US officials included, have condemned Israel’s military practices. Critics argue that Israel’s approach is not only causing unnecessary suffering but is counterproductive to achieving long-term peace in the region. The international community continues to urge both Israel and Hamas to engage in meaningful dialogue to address the underlying issues fueling the conflict.

The Political Landscape and Palestinian Statehood

The political atmosphere around the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is still extremely charged, especially regarding the issue of Palestinian statehood. Netanyahu’s government has expressed firm opposition to the establishment of a Palestinian state, which many believe is necessary for a lasting resolution to the conflict. This refusal is very much in line with Hamas’s playbook, forming a rare common ground between the two enemies.

Israel’s systematic military occupation of the West Bank makes it impossible to realistically pursue a two-state solution. Yet settlements persist, having swelled through this area even after the international community has condemned and demanded an end to this practice. More than 150 countries support a two-state solution. They underscore the deep need for renewed diplomatic engagement that would allow Palestinians to exercise self-determination and sovereignty. But equally problematic is Israel’s unwillingness to give up control over large swaths of the Occupied Territories.

Despite this unprecedented pressure from the international community, Netanyahu has stuck to his guns—literally—on his administration’s hard-line policies. He is a three-time, popularly-elected former state Legislator. As Israel’s longest-serving prime minister, he embodies a toxic political cocktail where national security fears trump all diplomatic overtures. Support from allies, including the United States during Donald Trump’s presidency, has emboldened Israel’s stance on territorial expansion and military action.

International Reactions and Future Prospects

The international community’s response to Israel’s actions in Gaza has been one of increasing dismay. Calls for accountability and respect of international law have increased exponentially, with Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, and many other human rights organizations extensively documenting these alleged violations. Earlier this year, President Biden characterized Israel’s bombing as “indiscriminate.” This is a significant change in U.S. rhetoric, signaling an intention to finally hold Israel’s feet to the flames.

Analysts are still warning that peace is not much closer to reality. They think a major policy change from both Israeli leadership and Hamas is needed for any real movement. Now, both advocates and opponents have dug into their respective trenches. This hatred and defiance perpetuates a cycle of violence that shows no sign of ceasing in the near future. Many observers advocate for renewed diplomatic efforts that would engage all stakeholders in meaningful conversations about peace.
