Nathan Buckley Takes a Step Towards Coaching Tasmania as He Joins Geelong

Nathan Buckley moves closer to his dream of being AFL’s first Tasmanian coach. He’s taken an assistant role at Geelong for the 2026 season. Buckley is re-entering a coaching role after a four-year absence. Since then, Tane continues to expand on his new media work after leaving Collingwood.

The ex Collingwood coach & Magpies great turns 53 today. He’s said he would love to coach Tasmania’s AFL team, the Devils, when they finally get a seat at the table in 2028. His return to the sidelines is a major development in his career as a possible successor looms on the horizon.

Buckley’s New Role at Geelong

Geelong officially announced Nathan Buckley’s appointment as an assistant coach, highlighting the club’s excitement about adding him to their coaching staff. His agenda, approach and the ultimate impact of his tenure remain to be seen. The addition of Buckley is a significant shot in the arm for Geelong’s football program.

Andrew Mackie, Geelong’s football manager, expressed enthusiasm about Buckley’s return to coaching.

“We are excited to add Nathan to our club and more specifically to our coaching group,” – Andrew Mackie

Mackie emphasized Buckley’s extensive experience and respect within the football industry, noting that he brings a fresh perspective to the team.

This joint effort is likely to improve Buckley’s coaching prowess as well as Geelong’s long-term prospects heading into the 2022 campaign.

Buckley’s Aspirations with Tasmania

Nathan Buckley is a man who has made no secret of his dreams to coach Tasmania when the state gets its long-awaited AFL team. His dedication to accomplishing this goal was clearly seen when he recently shared his honestly exuberant feeling about going back into coaching.

“But yeah, I’ve determined that I would love to coach again,” – Nathan Buckley

His interest in coaching roles was recently highlighted when he was approached for the Melbourne job, which he ultimately declined. Rather, he is currently more concerned with adding to his coaching portfolio while developing his record at the head of Geelong.

While Buckley’s potential larger impact on the Devils’ future is unknown, the Devils organization seemed excited about the prospect of Buckley coming back to coaching.

The Road Ahead

Nathan Buckley is returning to the senior coaching ranks. He will work closely with players and staff at Geelong as he makes this transition. Roy’s experience should help to prepare him even more for the leadership role with Tasmania when the time comes.

Buckley has an enviable resume and evident love of the game. He is suitably placed to make serious advancements at Geelong and likely with Tasmania in the years to come.
