Nic Maddinson Opens Up About Cancer Battle and Road to Recovery

Cricketer Nic Maddinson is candid about the toll of testicular cancer. What makes his journey even more inspiring is the fact that he has represented Australia in three Test matches and six T20 matches. The ex-Blues midfielder received the news of a new life-changing diagnosis just weeks after his final playing appearance in March. Shortly after his diagnosis, he underwent surgery to remove a brainstem tumor. After undergoing nine weeks of intensive chemotherapy, he emerged cancer-free in July.

Maddinson described the emotional toll of his diagnosis and treatment, stating, “Once I found out I had to have chemo, that was pretty hard to deal with.” His trip has been a physical test, of course, but a dramatic shift in his relational world, as well. In this trying time, his wife shouldered a huge burden. As she continued to run the home while pregnant and trying to keep up with their newly-minted toddler and two dogs. In the end, this meant her leaving her own dentist job to support him.

The positive effect of this difficult phase of Maddinson’s life has been raising health awareness. Looking back on his experience, he said, “Just think if I hadn’t gone to the doctor. He spread the message of the importance of getting care for unexpected health issues, encouraging those around him to take care of themselves. Above all else, I really just think it’s so important if you have anything you’re worried about, get it checked out,” he further added.

As Maddinson recovers, his passion to return to the game he loves is palpable and unwavering. He is hoping to return before the end of the year. Now, less than two weeks after finishing his chemotherapy treatment, he’s already had one hit-out at a Cricket NSW training base. His resilience and commitment to the sport are not just remarkable, they’re an inspiration.

As Maddinson continues on his path toward full recovery, his story will ring true with many who have endured the fight back from health adversity. He doesn’t shy away from sharing his struggles, teaching the power of vulnerability. His positive perspective shows that with support and drive, you can rise above challenges.
