Young Train Enthusiast Hosts Exhibition to Aid Sick Children

Brock Mewett, a ten-year-old boy from a small Victorian country town, revealed himself as a born train-lover. He capped his dazzling performance with a special exhibition at The National Hotel on Friday afternoon. The event featured a glimpse of his astounding scale model train collection. With your support, it went on to raise $810 on the way to The Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation. With over 60 children and their parents in attendance, the exhibition not only highlighted Brock’s love for trains but demonstrated the community’s support for a worthy cause.

Brock has been hooked on trains ever since he got a Thomas the Tank Engine set for his first birthday. His obsession only intensified with time, prompting him to accrue a wonderfully unique collection in the process that encompasses an array of makes and models. Among his favorites is Edward, the kind and helpful blue engine from the acclaimed Thomas the Tank Engine children’s series. Even with just under half of his full collection on display, Brock’s installation stopped many attendees in their tracks and created an air of excitement and inspiration.

A Community Unites for a Cause

It was an interesting choice to have a gold coin donation towards entry as it meant many were motivated to do so. Bill Lovell, the publican who organized the event, thought that it would bring in a few hundred dollars at the most. What he didn’t expect, though, was the final dollar amount raised — and his surprise at that.

“They thought it was great and everyone that came in really enjoyed it,” – Bill Lovell

Brock told us that he aims to inspire all those who visit his exhibition. He noted, “Well, I watched train shows over the years in Adelaide and Stawell and I just would like to do my own.” His mom, Sally Mewett, was right there with Brock. She noted that the fundraising goal was important, but so was generating excitement in the community.

“Some of it was to build enthusiasm and pretty much so we can raise some money and also so it will probably help out the Royal Children’s Hospital themselves,” – Brock Mewett

Sally called the community response “90 percent spectacular.” Local patrons who used to visit The National Hotel raved about being inside Brock’s labor of love.

“Oh wow, this is amazing,” – Brad, a local patron.

Plans for the Future

Building on the success of this first exhibition, Brock is already looking to the future, hoping to make it an annual event. He wants to keep building his collection, spreading awareness and joy through his love of the hobby, and helping sick kids in communities that need it most. Ryan Brown from The Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation expressed gratitude for Brock’s commitment.

“When we first learned about Brock’s exhibition and his incredibly generous donation to The Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation, we were delighted,” – Ryan Brown

Brown further emphasized the impact of Brock’s contribution on healthcare for children: “Brock’s contribution will help ensure sick kids can receive the best possible health care, and we are immensely proud to have his support.”

Sally Mewett shared her fond appreciation for everyone that helped her son’s movement.

“Words can’t express how grateful I am for everyone’s support and well wishes,” – Sally Mewett
