New York Jets Legend Nick Mangold Passes Away at 41

The football community remains shattered by Nick Mangold’s passing. The New York Jets’ legendary center has died at the all too young age of 41. Mangold is a popular choice among fans and the franchise’s history. He went on to play 11 seasons for the Jets after they selected him 29th overall in the first round of the NFL Draft in 2006. His contributions to the team and his impact off the field are a legacy that will forever last.

Mangold’s health issues started just a few months after he was drafted by the Jets. Despite enjoying a happy, full life, he was eventually diagnosed with a genetic defect that resulted in chronic kidney disease in 2006. As his situation deteriorated over time, he was on dialysis and continuing to seek a kidney transplant. Earlier this month, Mangold reached out to fans online to find a possible donor. Through it all, his fierce resolve to continue fighting the disease comes bursting through.

A Legacy of Excellence

Nick Mangold’s career with the New York Jets was illustrious to say the least. He quickly became known for his skills on the field, earning multiple Pro Bowl selections and recognition as one of the premier centers in the league. Beyond what he did on the field, it was Mangold’s personality that made him a favorite of fans and teammates.

Rex Ryan, who coached the Jets from 2009 to 2014, choked up when talking about the mold Mangold helped shape within the franchise.

“I had the pleasure of coaching him for all six years with the Jets,” – Rex Ryan.

Mangold’s legacy is further solidified by his induction into the Jets Ring of Honor, where he is remembered as one of the franchise’s all-time greats.

Beyond his football career, Mangold’s battle with chronic kidney disease highlighted a critical health issue affecting many individuals in the United States. According to Dr. Tara Narula, approximately 90,000 people are currently on waiting lists for kidney transplants. Tragically, 12 people die every day that they’re waiting for a donor.

“His legacy is etched into the very fabric of our organization.”

Dr. Narula underscored the importance of raising awareness about chronic kidney disease, adding,

“one of the greatest to ever wear the green and white.”

Personal Battles and Community Support

Mangold’s story shone a light on these shocking statistics and highlighted the need for organ donation and support in the Black community.

His call for assistance in finding a kidney donor struck a chord among fans and professional athletes alike. Willie Colon, a former Mangold teammate, captured Mangold’s character and loyalty to his mates in dark hours perfectly.

“We don’t talk a lot about chronic kidney disease.”

Nick Mangold’s legacy will outlive his football accomplishments. He was a devoted husband to Jenny and a loving father to his four children: Matthew, Eloise, Thomas, and Charlotte. It was his devotion to family and community that made him so beloved by all those fortunate enough to spend time with him.

On the field, Russ Spielman lauded Mangold’s character, focusing on his infectious attitude toward life.

“And there were times where, emotionally, I was a wreck, and he always had my back,” – Willie Colon.

Fond Remembrances and Tributes

Tributes have been coming in from across the league, from devoted fans. You see his career from the vantage point of history, his influence will definitely be felt for years to come. His legacy as an athlete and more importantly as a human being will continue to be an inspiration to countless others.

Mark Sanchez, former Jets quarterback, reflected on their relationship, stating,

“He was more than a teammate. He was my big brother who introduced me to the NFL. He showed me the ropes.”

Russ Spielman praised Mangold’s character off the field, emphasizing his positive outlook on life.

“Nick was an all-time great human being and always tried to have fun in everything he did,” – Russ Spielman.

As tributes pour in from around the league and fans alike, it is clear that Nick Mangold’s impact will be felt for years to come. His legacy as an athlete and as a person serves as an inspiration to many.
