Diamonds Aim to Overcome New Zealand Challenge in Constellation Cup

Australia and New Zealand enter the final year in an intense competition for the Constellation Cup. The series is tied, 2-2 and heading back to Boston! This pivotal showdown has turned this year’s play into an emotional, accusatory, energizing and sometimes even funny graveyard of their past encounters. Both teams are intensely competing for dominance in global netball. The stakes couldn’t be higher! If New Zealand manages to level the series, we’ll get to see an incredible short-form match-up known as Series Decider Time.

While the Series Decider Time is a new, exciting addition to the game, the intent is clear. Liz Watson, captain of the Australian team, takes her side into this pivotal crossroads. Going on history, Australia have looked the goods, having taken eight of the last ten series against the Kiwis. New Zealand is the reigning holder of the Cup. Victory was theirs in the previous trilogy, with a resounding 3-1 score.

Current Standings and Historical Context

Australia is now ranked first in the world. New Zealand isn’t far behind, in second place. This is an important juncture for the ongoing series. Both teams are preparing for an inevitable in a one-match Cup final. Still, Watson was confident that her team would win outright. She knew they faced major challenges, but she was confident they could get past them all even without additional time.

“Yeah, look, obviously disappointed with that game, obviously the loss but then the way we were playing as well,” – Liz Watson

Watson’s retrospective accounting of her team’s performance shows an admirable commitment to doing better. Even as Marta addressed the disappointment, she noted the bright spots in their performance. Australian captain, Sam Kerr, thinks their fitness levels could be important if the match goes to extra time.

Challenges Faced by Australia

At least, not given the historical record of the Australian team against New Zealand. Watson conceded that their recent track record in New Zealand is less than stellar.

“I guess it’s no lie, we have that record here, it’s not awesome,” – Liz Watson

Without doubt, the familiarity and comfort of playing at home gives an advantage to New Zealand. When the T-Reds benefit from great moments, Watson added, that home crowd provides an upbuilding atmosphere that’ll help fuel strong performances.

“When you are playing at home you do have that familiarity; it’s like a lot more comfortable, you’ve got your fans and your friends there as well which is something that obviously the Ferns are thriving on, playing over here,” – Liz Watson

Even with these challenges, Watson stressed that her team’s priority has been to pivot and be nimble and resilient.

“But we’ve got to be able to play anywhere at any time and that’s been the focus for us for such a long time,” – Liz Watson

The Path Forward

Both sides are looking to set the tone as the Constellation Cup returns to life. Smart and agile Watson has no doubt that the right team will win this battle today. The fierceness of the competition indicates that neither team will shy away from making their best play.

“It’s going to show that the best team on the day is going to have to take it all the way,” – Liz Watson

The anticipation surrounding this match is palpable. If neither side is leading at the end of extra time, the match will continue. It won’t end until one team is ahead by two goals. This new format ensures a thrilling end to a hotly contested match-up.
