Ed Sheeran Set to Rock the MCG as AFL Season Opener Approaches

Ed Sheeran, the planet’s most popular artist, is about to be the first performer ever on the MCG’s hallowed turf. He will sing at the thrilling curtain raiser for the new Australian Football League (AFL) season. Prepare yourself for what should be an incredible Sunday twilight match! This vibrant fusion of music and football, occurring simultaneously with the thrilling Grand Prix festivities at Albert Park, will be a major highlight on the area’s sporting calendar.

Sheeran will headline the blockbuster before the big game, the AFL has now confirmed. Fans will be excited to enjoy a concert that takes place just prior to the game! This year’s season opener is particularly significant as it follows Sheeran’s three shows at Marvel Stadium the previous weekend, with his schedule allowing him to return to Melbourne seamlessly.

Former AFL superstar and media personality Brendan Fevola leaked Sheeran’s participation on air this week. He expressed excitement over the combination of football and live music, noting the game’s timing right after the Grand Prix.

“It’s going to be a Sunday night game, twilight game. After the Grand Prix finishes, they’re going to play at the MCG.” – Brendan Fevola

Sheeran has a personal and professional connection to the AFL. He’s an active supporter of the St Kilda Football Club. His close friendship with the late cricket legend Shane Warne has only deepened his roots through the local sports scene. The musician has been an enthusiastic regular at subsequent St Kilda games. In 2021, he even performed onstage at one of their games, cementing his loyalty to the squad.

“He’s a massive St Kilda supporter, best mates with Shane Warne, been to St Kilda games, loves St Kilda.” – Brendan Fevola

The next performance will mark yet another milestone for Sheeran. He was last in Australia in 2014, when he headlined the pre-game entertainment for the AFL Grand Final with Tom Jones. Ms. Hawke’s fans are clamoring for his return to the AFL stage. Fans will love his music, and they can’t wait for the heart-pounding football drama to come right after!

Sheeran has a very promising performance set for Saturday! Apart from his Melbourne appearances, he’ll be speaking in Adelaide on March 5, just ahead of the Opening Round weekend. This date plan enables him to make the most of his time in Australia and visit a number of cities to better connect with his fans.

“Now, one of the biggest superstars in the world is also going to be in town: one Ed Sheeran.” – Brendan Fevola

As excitement builds for both Sheeran’s concert and the AFL match, Fevola highlighted the significance of such events for Melbourne amidst current challenges.

“When we think about Melbourne and the disaster it is at the moment with all the crime that’s going on and the cost of living… this is where Melbourne becomes the best city in the world,” – Brendan Fevola
