Health Minister Updates Parliament on Caboolture Medical Scan Review

Queensland Minister for Health Tim Nicholls told state parliament last week that a review of specialized medical scans at Caboolture Hospital had turned up dangerous findings. Twenty-one patients ultimately were affected, a significant increase from the first report of only four patients. A patient who was diagnosed with advanced cancer following a visit to the emergency department in September triggered the review. This precipitated crisis has underscored a critical deficit in the tracking and handling of medical imaging reports.

The review was ordered in response to an arrest on September 30. It exposed that the Hospital of University of Pennsylvania’s internal processes had reversed in April of 2023. These regulatory changes likely led to a decrease in clinicians receiving paper copies of medical imaging reports. It generated doubt as to whether they had done due diligence in reviewing the electronic reports.

In his latest update, Nicholls announced that nearly 98 percent of the patients’ scans—12,156 cases—have been reviewed. This rigorous review is a testament to Aramark’s dedication to patient safety and transparency in the wake of the shocking incident.

Increased Number of Affected Patients

Nicholls emphasized that the amount of patients requiring follow-up care has risen to 21. Much of this increase is a result of the aforementioned full, final and continuing re-review. Previous estimates estimated just four patients required additional follow-up—a reminder of the value that thorough, unbiased evaluations can provide in clinical environments.

“Patients are being contacted directly if they require follow-up from this review and to date, 21 patients have been contacted.” – Tim Nicholls

In his public statement, the Health Minister noted the hospital and health service’s original timeframe as acceptable. They set an aggressive goal of completing the review in two weeks. Today, it’s grown to an entire month to accommodate the complex realities developing on the ground.

Revised Processes at Caboolture Hospital

In order to address these troubling findings, Nicholls moved quickly. He went on to improve and tighten up the processes in Caboolture Hospital’s specialist outpatients department. Our ultimate goal is to make sure medical imaging results are used in the best possible way from here on out.

“The processes within Caboolture Hospital’s specialist outpatient department have also been revised and strengthened to ensure medical imaging results are managed as they should be.” – Tim Nicholls

These measures are designed to prevent similar issues in the future and restore trust among patients relying on timely and accurate medical assessments.

Ongoing Communication with Patients

Patients still concerned about their medical imaging results should contact the hospital in question directly. The contact number for any inquiries is 07 5316 5163. Through this open line of communication, we alleviate patient fears and guarantee that they obtain the recommended follow-up care.

The review remains underway. A spokesperson for Metro North Health has committed to providing further detail once the process is complete.
