The Fall from Grace of Prince Andrew: A Comprehensive Timeline

Prince Andrew, once the popular, handsome, and adventurous royal favorite, has fallen from grace. He has been the subject of intense controversy and public outrage due to his connections with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. This article chronicles the tale of Andrew’s comeback story gone wrong. US photographer and filmmaker Fenton Bailey uses the full-length documentary to detail The Prince of Wales’ relationships, legal battles and how these events have impacted his royal status.

A photo taken in February 2000 shows Prince Andrew with Epstein (right) at Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club in Florida. This fateful meeting was the start of an unlikely friendship that would one day ignite national outcry. Just two months later, in April 2000, he attended a party hosted by Queen Elizabeth at Windsor Castle to celebrate his 40th birthday. Notably, Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell were at this same meeting, underscoring Andrew’s connections to the notorious pair even more clearly.

Andrew’s first encounter with Epstein was in 1999, set up by Maxwell, the very close associate to both men. This connection would be disastrous to Andrew’s good name. In later years, Epstein would find himself embroiled in legal hell over the very activity he’s been permitted to do here. In 2008, he pleaded guilty to those same charges of prostituting minors and was sentenced to 18 months in prison. Andrew’s close friendship with Epstein lasted decades. Yet, continued public outcry forced him to eventually step down from his position as British trade envoy in 2011.

Prince Andrew stated that he had cut ties with Epstein in 2010. Except that’s exactly what he did when he emailed Epstein on February 28, 2011. This letter was in stark contrast to his earlier claims and led to even more concern about just how corrupt their relationship was.

In August of 2021, Virginia Giuffre, an American woman whom Epstein trafficked called out Prince Andrew for allegedly sexually assaulting her at just 17 years of age. When those allegations first became public in a lawsuit filed against him, the ensuing media firestorm was absolutely apocalyptic. In response, Andrew’s legal team rejected Giuffre’s claims. Andrew “unequivocally denies” Giuffre’s allegations.

The scandal only deepened after Epstein died by suicide in jail in July 2019. He was awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges of his own at the time. In June 2022, justice was served—and yet justice got away. She was found guilty of several counts of sex trafficking and other felonies, resulting in a 20-year federal prison sentence.

As alluded to above, the effect of public pressure was greatly magnified by Prince Andrew’s growing isolation from royal life. In February 2022, just months before Giuffre’s civil case was set to go to trial, he reached an out-of-court settlement. While the settlement held him accountable financially, it didn’t require him to admit any wrongdoing. Politically, it was a game changer for him.

In October 2022, Buckingham Palace successfully removed Prince Andrew of his royal title. He was threatened with eviction from his official residence of more than 50 years, Royal Lodge in Windsor. Buckingham Palace followed with a statement reiterating their commitment to stand by victims of abuse throughout this difficult time.

“Their Majesties wish to make clear that their thoughts and utmost sympathies have been, and will remain with, the victims and survivors of any and all forms of abuse.” – Buckingham Palace

Following all of these changes Prince Andrew will take the name Andrew Mountbatten Windsor. He will soon move into a private home, providing the clearest break from royal life yet.

In a rare public statement reflecting on the situation, he remarked, “We are in this together and will have to rise above it.” He expressed frustration regarding the ongoing scrutiny, stating that “the continued accusations about me distract from the work of His Majesty and the royal family.”

In April 2025, an unspeakable tragedy occurred when Virginia Giuffre ended her own life. She was at her home in Neergabby, Western Australia, when this tragic news came to pass. Her death has renewed discussions surrounding the support systems for victims of abuse and the broader implications of such high-profile cases.

Prince Andrew is keeping a low profile these days. He admits the pain morally weighing on him in making these past decisions and how those painful choices grew to change his life and family. The damage stemming from his ties to Epstein have forever changed his status within the royal family and public life.
